Portal Picnics Series: RMIT University district

Welcome to the first of our Portal Picnics series!  Here, we give you a list of portals with recommendations for places to buy food nearby.

RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) University is home to a number of portals: RMIT University, RMIT Building 80, Swanston Academic Building RMIT, Casey Wing Statue, Druids, The Oxford Scholar and Artist Supplies Mural.  This area is easily accessible by public transport.  Melbourne Central station is a minute’s walk away and there are numerous trams along Swanston Street.  Flinders Street Station is about a 10 minute brisk walk away.

Below are some recommendations by Melbourne Enlightened agents.  If you have something you’d like to add, please leave a comment and the list will be updated!

Eatery: RUSU Realfoods (in the RMIT cafeteria area at Building 8, Level 4. See link for opening hours)

Portal: RMIT University, Swanston Academic Building and Druids can be hacked from the caf area while you eat your lunch if you’re lucky.  Oxford Scholar very closeby.

Type of food: Organic, fair trade, wholefoods.  Dhal and veg curries on quinoa or brown rice, pizza, pies, salad, soups, hot meals, smoothies, dessert with a selection of raw options.

Suitable for: Raw foodies, vegans, vegetarians, some gluten free options.

Price range: the three curries on brown rice or quinoa is about $8.

Notes: most food is vegan (or has always been vegan when this reviewer has visited three times!).

Eatery: Wonderbao  (see Facebook page for opening hours), in the rear lobby area of 31 A’Beckett street.  Can be accessed from the laneway near the portal.

Portal: Artist Supply Mural can be hacked.  RMIT portals are a stone’s throw away.

Type of food: steamed bao (buns).

Suitable for: omnivores, vegetarians, vegans (the vegetarian options are all vegan).

Price range: the three vegan/vegetarian bao options cost $7.50 total and are very filling.  Other bao range from around the $2 to $4 mark.

Notes: No gluten free options for food.  Seating is minimal, there is a bench along the window which has six stools.  Lunch hour is busy and you may have to place your order then wait out in the lobby area.  Outside of the lunch rush is best.

Type of food: lots of options!  The caf is aimed at the uni students– pizza, takeaway style foods, Asian, juice bar, coffee

Suitable for: most preferences.  There are great vegan options at Realfoods.

Price range: varies!

Notes: busiest during lunch hour.  Open during university semesters and closed during breaks.

Portal: Oxford Scholar.  RMIT portals very closeby and Druids portal within range.

Suitable for: omnivores, vegetarians.

Price range: reasonable prices for pub food.  See the link for menu.

Notes: Can be busy during lunch, dinner and happy hour.  Prices posted up on door.
